How to Search for Your Birthing Hospital and OB-Gyne

January 16, 2015
Searching for your birthing hospital and ob-gyne can be a little overwhelming especially if you became an unpexpectant mother. But, don't you worry! I am here to help you out. It's all about RESEARCHING!

You just found out that you're pregnant, now what?

The first thing that you have to do is to have your very first pre-natal check-up. For some, it will matter to them to figure out their birthing hospital and the OB that will fit their needs as early as now. For others, they will opt to find suitable hospital and obs as they progress with their pregnancy.

Here are the things I found out and some tips that I was able to pick-up during my first trimester research:

1. You can always change your OB-Gyne.

This is my first pregnancy and I am clueless If you feel like you and your current OB don't get along well, or you're just not at ease with her then that's probably a good sign to look for another OB. It is important for you to feel comfortable with her as she will guide you throughout your whole pregnancy.

2. Consider hospitals near your house.

This is no brainer! Look for hospitals near you so that you can easily hustle to the emergency room if you need to. Yes, even if you have a car. Less traffic, the better.

3. Ask your friends and relatives who gave birth or will give birth.

It is always nice to turn to your friends and relatives for an advice. For one, you will be sure that they are recommending a trusted hospital and OB.

4. Check women or parenting forums.

This is proven effective! (Because I found mine on the forum) When you are not busy doing anything, spend your time reading forums on the internet. What's best is that you can interact with your fellows mommas to be. Gain a friend and gain referrals to their OBs and birthing hospital, you can even compare birthing costs. I assure you, the moment I found the right thread eh sinulit ko na talaga. I was able to easily switch OBs and decide on birthing hospital with the help of the forum I found.

5. What is your budget?

Some of us may have birthing budget and some may not. Your budget can also determine which hospital you will give birth to as well as your ob-gyne's professional fee. I suggest, you ask immediately for the estimated birthing cost when you are inquiring for hospitals and OBs so you will have time to search for other hospitals and OBs that will fit your budget.

6. Check hospital facilities and OBs experience.

It is always good to check out the hospital where you are planning to give birth. Find out whether or not the hospital is equipped with proper machines or rooms in case an emergency happens to you while you are giving birth. There are some situations wherein you will be transferred to another hospital just because your current hospital lacks the equipment.

You may also want to research about your OB-Gyne. Ask her previous patients if they had wonderful experience with her or not. Most of the time, you'll be able to read about them on the internet.

With my case, I found a few friends within the forum who vouched for my new OB, so I didn't have problems with her.

7. What is your birthing plan?

You may want to deliver your baby with your husband with you, or you may want to have somebody take a video or photo while you are giving birth. Some hospitals and OBs do not allow these kind of requests. If it is important to you, then you might have to search for a hospital that will allow you to do it.

Whichever hospital you decided to go and whoever OB you decided to settle for, always remember that both you and your baby's life will depend on it. Be sure that you are 101% comfortable and your mind is at ease when you have already chosen your birthing hospital and OB. :)

Good luck and share with me where you decided to give birth!
